Cable End Sealing for Storage, Transport, and Installation

Heat shrinkable end caps are applied over cut cable ends to provide a sealed, protective covering against moisture ingress, contamination, and mechanical damage. The cap shrinks under heat to conform tightly to the cable outer diameter — the integral adhesive inner lining activates in the same pass, bonding to the cable surface and forming a continuous watertight seal at the cable end face.

End caps are used at every stage of the cable lifecycle — from drummed cable storage in open yards and site conditions, through installation periods where cut cable ends remain exposed, to long-term protection of idle or spare cable ends in live systems. A single product type covers both temporary and permanent sealing requirements across a wide cable diameter range.

Why End Caps Are Specified

Effective Moisture Sealing

Adhesive inner lining bonds to the cable surface during heat shrink, forming a continuous watertight seal at the cable end — excluding moisture, groundwater, and condensation from entering the cable conductor and insulation structure.

Contamination Protection

Sealed end cap prevents dust, dirt, oil, and site contaminants from reaching cable conductors and insulation — maintaining cable end condition throughout storage, handling, and installation periods until the cable is terminated.

UV and Weather Resistance

UV-stabilised crosslinked polyolefin maintains sealing performance in direct outdoor exposure — suitable for cable drum storage in open yards, site cable routes, and outdoor installation environments without degradation over extended periods.

Mechanical End Protection

The recovered cap body provides a degree of mechanical protection to the cable end — reducing the risk of conductor damage, insulation cuts, and moisture ingress from site handling, cable laying, and drumming operations.

Fast Single-Pass Installation

Applied and shrunk in a single operation with a hot air gun — no additional sealant, tape, or mechanical closure required. The cap is ready for installation immediately after recovery and cooling.

How to Select the Right End Cap

Four parameters determine the correct end cap size. Confirm each before ordering to ensure the cap fits and seals correctly.

  1. 01

    Cable Outer Diameter

    The cable outer diameter is the primary sizing parameter. Measure the outer diameter of the cable at the end where the cap will be applied — this should be the overall sheath or jacket outer diameter for whole-cable end sealing, or the conductor bundle diameter for stripped-end applications. Select an end cap whose recovered diameter range encompasses this measurement, using the 3:1 shrink ratio to confirm fit. A cap that is oversized will not seal adequately against the cable surface.

  2. 02

    Sealing Requirement — Whole Cable or Stripped End

    Determine whether the cap will be applied over the complete cable outer sheath (for drum storage and transport protection), or over a stripped and prepared cable end (for installation-phase or permanent conductor-end protection). The application point determines the diameter to measure and the cap length required. For stripped ends with exposed conductors, a longer cap may be required to cover the full prepared conductor length.

    Installation Environment

    Standard end caps are suitable for indoor, outdoor, and underground applications. For outdoor installations in direct UV exposure or coastal environments, confirm that the standard UV-stabilised grade is sufficient for the expected exposure duration. For underground and submerged applications where the cap must maintain its seal against groundwater pressure, confirm the adhesive liner thickness and sealing overlap requirements with our technical team.

    Adhesive Liner Requirement

    All standard Western Cablex end caps include an integral hot-melt adhesive inner lining as supplied. For temporary protection applications where the cap may be removed and the cable end re-prepared before termination, confirm that the adhesive bond does not create a removal difficulty for the installation team. For temporary covers, contact our team to discuss non-adhesive or low-bond alternatives where re-entry without cable damage is a requirement.
