Mastic Tapes

Black Mastic

Black mastic designed to provide reliable sealing and moisture protection in cable joints and terminations — conforming to irregular geometries and void filling at insulation interfaces, connector entries, and joint bodies across low-voltage and medium-voltage cable accessory assemblies.

Moisture Sealing and Void Fill for Cable Accessory Assemblies

Black Mastic is a hand-applied sealing mastic used to fill voids and seal interfaces within cable joint and termination assemblies — at connector entries, conductor transitions, and core separations — creating a continuous moisture-excluding barrier before outer heat shrink components are applied.

Black Mastic is electrically insulating, flexible, and waterproof. It self-amalgamates under hand pressure, conforms to irregular profiles, and maintains its sealing function across the temperature cycling conditions of in-service cable accessories without heat equipment.

Why Black Mastic Is Specified

A practical sealing mastic for void filling and moisture exclusion within cable accessory assemblies — hand-applied with no heat equipment required.

Excellent Moisture Sealing

Seals voids and interfaces against moisture ingress within cable joint and termination assemblies — forming a continuous waterproof barrier at connector entries, conductor transitions, and internal surface discontinuities before outer enclosure components are applied.

Waterproof Protection

Provides waterproof encapsulation of internal joint and termination interfaces — protecting conductors, insulation, and connector surfaces from moisture-driven degradation in both underground and above-ground cable accessory installations.

Flexible and Conformable

Moulds to irregular surface profiles, conductor geometries, and connector shapes under hand pressure — filling voids completely without air pockets and maintaining flexibility across the thermal cycling range of in-service cable accessories.

Long-Term Sealing Performance

Retains sealing function and flexibility throughout the service life of the cable accessory — resisting hardening, cracking, or moisture absorption over time, so the internal sealing layer remains effective without periodic intervention.

Compatible with Heat Shrink Systems

Formulated to be compatible with heat shrink tube materials and hot-melt adhesive liners — can be positioned and heat recovered over without compromising the seal or the adhesion of the outer heat shrink component.

Easy Hand Application

Applied directly from the roll by wrapping and moulding with hands — no heat gun, mixing, or specialist tooling required. Practical for field installation in all orientations and confined spaces typical of joint bays and termination locations.

Where Black Mastic Is Used

Applied at void fill and sealing positions within cable joint and termination kit assembly sequences across low-voltage and medium-voltage cable accessory installations.

01

Cable Joint Assemblies

Applied within heat shrink cable joint assemblies at connector entries and insulation interfaces — sealing the transition between conductor connector and cable insulation, and filling voids at the joint body prior to outer tube recovery.

02

Cable Termination Assemblies

Used within low-voltage and medium-voltage cable termination kits to seal internal interfaces at lug connections, insulation transitions, and cable entry points — providing the moisture exclusion layer at internal assembly positions before outer heat shrink components are applied.

03

Underground Cable Accessories

Specified for underground cable joints and terminations where groundwater and soil moisture create continuous waterproofing demands — Black Mastic provides the internal sealing layer that complements the outer moisture protection of the cable accessory enclosure.

04

Multi-core Cable Breakout Sealing

Applied at core separation and crotch interfaces within multi-core cable joint assemblies — filling the irregular void geometry at the cable breakout point before the breakout moulding or outer sleeves are applied over the assembly.

05

Industrial Wiring and Panel Entries

Used at cable entry sealing positions in industrial panels, junction boxes, and equipment housings — sealing the annular void around cable entries against moisture and dust ingress where a flexible, hand-applied sealing material is required.

06

Distribution and Utility Networks

Supplied as a component within cable accessory kits for utility distribution network jointing and termination programmes — used by utility cable jointers at the void fill and sealing steps defined in kit installation instructions.

When and How to Use Black Mastic

Black Mastic is applied at specific void fill and sealing positions within cable accessory assemblies. Confirm the application requirement against each criterion before specifying.

  1. 01

    Confirm the Required Sealing Function

Black Mastic is specified where the requirement is void filling, moisture exclusion, and general insulating sealing at internal cable accessory interfaces. It is not a stress grading material and does not provide stress redistribution at insulation screen cut-backs — that function requires Stress Control Mastic (Stress Control Mastic). It also does not provide surface tracking resistance for outdoor applications — that function requires Anti-Tracking Mastic (Anti-Tracking Mastic). Confirm the sealing role at each application position before selecting the appropriate mastic formulation.

  2. 02

Identify Application Position in the Kit Assembly

Black Mastic is applied at specific positions defined in the cable accessory kit installation instructions — typically at connector entries, crotch void fill positions, and interface sealing steps before outer heat shrink tubes are recovered. Do not apply Black Mastic at positions where Stress Control Mastic or Anti-Tracking Mastic are specified — mastic formulations must not be substituted between positions. Follow the kit installation instruction sequence precisely for the specific joint or termination type being installed.

  3. 03

    Low-Voltage vs Medium-Voltage Cable Accessories

Black Mastic is used across both low-voltage and medium-voltage cable accessory assemblies. For medium-voltage joints and terminations, Black Mastic at the connector void fill position is typically applied in conjunction with Stress Control Mastic at the screen cut-back — both are distinct steps within the medium-voltage kit installation sequence. Confirm the complete kit installation instruction to understand the full mastic application sequence for the specific cable system voltage and accessory type.

Black Mastic vs Stress Control Mastic vs Anti-Tracking Mastic — Correct Formulation

All three mastics are included in Western Cablex cable accessory systems but serve distinct functions: Black Mastic provides general-purpose void fill and moisture sealing at connector entries and insulation interfaces. Stress Control Mastic (Stress Control Mastic) provides electrical stress grading at insulation screen cut-back positions — it is semiconductive and must only be used at the screen transition. Anti-Tracking Mastic (Anti-Tracking Mastic) provides outdoor surface tracking resistance at exposed termination surfaces. Applying the wrong formulation at a position is an installation error that can compromise the electrical performance of the cable accessory.

Black Mastic is most commonly supplied as a component within Western Cablex cable accessory kits. If ordering Black Mastic separately for maintenance or retrofit use, contact our technical team to confirm the correct grade and quantity for your specific joint or termination type.
